I love hearing from many of you who are reaching out to say hello or submitting your work!
Enjoy these super fun activities this week! Remember to email me any videos or sound clips of you performing any of these activities!
Kindergarten, 1st Grade, and Second Grade:
What is Sound?
Combining Science with Music
Vocabulary:
Sound: Vibrations that we can hear.
Vibration: A rapid back-and-forth motion.
Pitch: How high or low a sound is.
Volume: How quiet or loud a sound is.
Let’s create an instrument that makes sound!
You can choose from choice #1 or choice #2 (or choose both!)………..
Choice #1: Shakers
Materials you will need:
*Any container that has a lid (no glass)
For example; coffee can, yogurt container, pringles can, water bottles, etc….
*Rice, beans, beads, or pebbles.
*Tape
- Put some of the rice, beans, or pebbles into your container and seal it. Use tape or elastic band with cling wrap to secure the end.
- Decorate your container.
- Make a second shaker that is larger or smaller than the previous.
- Play it with your favorite song.
- Optional: email it to__________to show what you made.
Discussion Questions:
- If you made two shakers, how are they different in pitch and volume?
- If you filled one with rice and one with beans (or pebbles), does that change the pitch and volume of the instrument? How so?
Choice #2
Junk Band
Find anything in your house that creates a sound (pots and pans, wooden spoons or metal spoons, buckets, boxes, etc.) and see what kind of sounds you can make. Create a band with your family with different sounds.
Discussion Questions:
- How is the pitch different with each sound?
- Is the pitch different based on the size of the instrument? How?
- How is the volume different with each sound? Which material (metal, wood, cardboard, etc) is the loudest? Which material is most quiet?
Additional links to help with understanding:
When an object vibrates, it creates sound waves. Notice that sound waves
move faster when the pitch is higher and slower when the pitch is lower:

*~TALENT SHOW TIME!~*
Pretend you are about to audition for our school talent show. What act will you prepare and perform? Sing a solo? Play a song on your instrument? Perform a magic trick? Make us laugh with a comedy routine? Perform a short gymnastics or dance routine?
1. Decide what you would perform
2. Decide if you would need any recorded music, and find it at home or online
3. Make sure your performance is under 2 minutes long
4.. Practice your act
5. Have someone at home record your act!
6. Email me your recorded performance!
I can't WAIT to watch all your performances, because I know each and every one of you have a talent to showcase and be proud of. Rebecca.hunt@dmschools.org
